Aurora

By Geoff Bartlett (2005)

Named after the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora’s inverted cargo net makes a symbolic connection to Docklands’ history as Victoria’s most important port.

The stainless steel surface is highly reflective and, at night, is lit from within to create a glowing orb floating above the street. The piece encourages pedestrians to walk through its legs and look upwards, to ‘focus their attention away from the everyday and to reflect upon the work and the sky beyond.’

Location: Corner Harbour Esplanade and Bourke Street.

The Kick

By Terrance Plowright (2019)

Terrance Plowright’s statue of Tayla Harris, based on Michael Wilson’s award-winning image, The Kick and depicting a major moment in Australia’s female sporting history, has found its home at Victoria Point.

21 year old Harris was captured athletically mid-kick, however the photo attracted negative attention on social media. Through the controversy, it has become a symbol of female athleticism and important discussion on misogyny.

Celestial Ground

By Geoff Bartlett (2005)

‘Celestial Ground’ is an embodiment of the scientific ideas of astronomy, observation, geometry, and mapping. The folding plates of the form are loosely based on the geometric diagram of a form of carbon(C60) that has been found in outer space. Some panels are etched with images and constellations from the southern night skies providing a visual reminder of what remains hidden from view during the day. The mirror-polished panels reference telescopic observations of the skies, but also invite the viewer to reflect upon their own place within the universe, whether that be amongst the stars above or on the solid ground beneath.

Poise

By Warren Langley (2005)

Made from toughened safety glass and LED lighting within a steel frame, Poise is shimmering and crystalline by day and glowing blue by night.

Langley says:

‘It would appear that every culture has within its mythology a sacred vessel. These vessels are variously perceived as receptacles of something precious, whether spiritual intent or otherwise. Here, the precarious position of the vessel speaks of the delicate state of balance.’
